Alright, so I decided to switch things up a bit with my hair. Been seeing Conor McGregor’s style everywhere, you know? That sharp look. Figured, why not give it a shot myself?
Getting Started
First thing I did was just pull up a bunch of pictures on my phone. McGregor’s had a few variations, but the main thing is that super tight undercut or fade on the sides and back, with more length left on top, usually slicked back or to the side. Some photos showed a hard part, some didn’t. I kinda liked the really disconnected look, where the sides are almost shaved right up to the longer hair on top.
I saved a couple of the clearest photos showing the sides, the back, and how the top connects (or rather, doesn’t connect) to the sides. Figured showing the barber exactly what I wanted was better than trying to explain it and ending up with something weird.
The Barber Shop Trip
Went down to my usual spot. Showed my barber the photos. He nodded, seemed to get it right away. “Ah, the McGregor, yeah?” he said. Made me feel a bit more confident.
Then came the clippers. Man, that first pass when they go high up the sides feels kinda drastic! He started with a pretty low guard, buzzing the sides and back way up. Then he worked on the fade, blending it down towards the bottom, but keeping that sharp contrast with the top section. That part is key, I think. The disconnect.

- Cleaned up the neckline nice and sharp.
- Left the top significantly longer, maybe a few inches.
- Used scissors on top to add some texture and shape it for styling back.
He also tidied up my beard, keeping it relatively neat to match the clean lines of the haircut. That seemed important too, the whole look kinda works together.
Styling and First Look
After the cut, he put some product in – looked like a matte pomade or wax – and styled it back, slightly off to one side. Seeing it done professionally helped. When I got home and looked in the mirror properly, it was definitely a change! Took a second to get used to. It felt much cleaner, sharper.
Trying to style it myself the next morning was the real test. Washed my hair, towel-dried it pretty well, then worked a small amount of pomade through it. Combed it back and slightly over. It wasn’t exactly like the barber did it, but close enough. The main thing is getting the sides super flat and the top volume directed back. It definitely needs product; without it, the top just flops around.
Living With It
Been a week or so now. The biggest thing? Maintenance. To keep that fade looking sharp and the undercut defined, you really need to get trims pretty often. Like, every couple of weeks, probably. The sides grow out fast and ruin the effect. But hey, it looks pretty cool when it’s fresh. Feels bold, you know? Definitely a statement haircut. Overall, glad I tried it. It’s a strong look, for sure.
