Okay, so I’ve been trying to fix my slice lately, and I heard about this “wristband drill” thing. Figured I’d give it a shot, and, well, document the whole messy process. It’s supposed to help with keeping your wrists in the right position during the swing, you know? I am not professional, just share my experience to my blog.

Getting Started

First, I grabbed an old sweatband – the kind you wear for, like, aerobics or whatever. I don’t play tennis. I just got it. Lucky me I am a hoarder. If you don’t have one, I guess you could use a piece of cloth or something, but the sweatband felt snug enough.

The Setup

I slipped the wristband onto my lead wrist (I’m a righty, so it went on my left wrist). The key, I read, is to position it so it covers your wrist joint – not too high up your forearm, not too low down on your hand. It took a few tries to get it feeling right.

  • Tried it too high: Felt weird, restricted my movement.
  • Tried it too low: Didn’t really do anything.
  • Got it just right: Covered the wrist joint, felt snug but not tight.

The Swing (and the Struggle)

Now for the fun part. I took my normal grip, addressed the ball (well, imaginary ball, since I was in my backyard), and started my backswing. The idea is that the wristband should prevent you from cupping your wrist – that’s apparently a big cause of slicing.

My first few swings? Awful. Totally felt the wristband restricting me. I was so used to breaking my wrist that the correct position felt completely alien. Hit a few imaginary balls that probably would have ended up in the neighbor’s yard if they were real.

I kept at it, though. I focused on keeping my lead wrist flat, letting the wristband act as a guide. Slowly, very slowly, it started to feel a bit more natural. I started to feel the clubhead lagging behind, which is supposed to be a good thing.

The Results (So Far)

I wouldn’t say I’m magically cured of my slice, but I do feel a difference. The wristband really forces you to be aware of your wrist position. I’m going to keep practicing with it, I think that’s the most important thing. Hopefully, after all that, I will be able to hit the real ball to where I want. I’ll probably head to the driving range next week and see if it translates to actual ball flight. Wish me luck!
