5 Gravely, William H. CAN THE WATER BE MADE FINE? SOUTHERN POLITICS AND WOMEN: PRIMARIES, PROHIBITION, THE NEGRO QUESTION AND REMEDY.
(Roanoke?, VA) 1921
35pp. Second ed of which OCLC locates no lib w/ a copy. This ed w/ 4 extra pages (13-16) on labor.. Wrps, .v.g. (mild attic dust). The first edition pamphlet, listed by OCLC in only six libraries, and not one of them predominantly Afro-American.. Gravely, an atty who served in VA Legislature, speaks w/more respect & openness about the "Negro Question & Remedy" than most. "The truth is then, & let it be plainly told, that in order to solve the political problem in the Southern states, & to bring about a condition of affairs suitable for the participation of white women in Republican or opposition politics, not only must the political supremacy of the white race be guaranteed, but the respective races must pursue their political activities in distinct paths-in separate conventions, at separate ballot-boxes, & for separate representatives." In return for the privilege of Black members to the House of Representatives, they would not be allowed any VA State political patronage "to avoid chance of disagreeable" contact, especially w/white women. He would require a $2000 property qualification exclusively applicable to Negro voters. Good example of being far in advance for his time in strongly segregated Southside VA (Trial of Martinsville Seven took place 1951, and the Danville Riots nearly a century earlier). "Rt foot fwd. left stagnant". No copy on line. Temperance. (4739525916)

6 Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States (Commandry of the state of California) Collection of fifteen years (average 30 per year) of information circulars issued by the California MOLLUS
San Francisco 1882+
Circulars for 1882-3, 18854-50, 1889-90, 1894, 1901, 1903-7, 1909-11. Unbound, from 13 to 50 circulars for each year, (Not every year has a complete sequence: 1910, for instance has 26 out of 41 issues). Approximately 500 in all. Circulars include names of applicants, action, banquets, obits, etc. Includes at least two Officers of the Colored Infantry and another on President McKinley. These are nearly all fine, the first issue for each year with a library stamp at bottom margin. We will include correspondence verifying deaccession. We searched OCLC under MOLLUS spelled out, commandry of the state of California, San Francisco and year and found no library with even a partial run for a single year. We did find four single issues. (2/14). Likewise, a search on line revealed no listings. (5699385317)
