30 WILLIAMS-LEWIS ARCHIVE FROM RHODE ISLAND TO NEW YORK

Collection of correspondence, financial records and social memorabilia c. 1880-1900. Miss Abby and Miss Mildred Williams, daughters of Fielding Williams, lived sometimes in Bristol, RI and sometimes at 15 W. 22 St. in NYC, descended from the Townes, Maclin, and Boyd families which saw marriages into the Williams, Calhoun, Lyne, Lewis, Bullock, Johnson and Swepson families (a genealogical record is included). Relatively affluent, the Misses Williams were able to make the European tour, participate in the DAR, and receive invitations to events as well as to receive an abundance of the black-bordered sympathy cards so in vogue at that time. Special mention should be made about the many stamped envelopes in the collection and the over 50 dance cards (as in "my card is full"). Social correspondence includes over 450 items, some sent home from the Grand Tour, some family matters, etc. Financial Records include many cancelled checks (watch for endorser AUTOGRAPHS and revenue stamps), bills from Grand Tour, nine check registers with nearly 600 check stubs (and a comparable number of deposit details with a balance running frequently in four figures), two small expense registers, estate settlement details and more. Social Memorabilia can be evaluated from over 1100 "at home" cards, black bordered sympathy cards, invitations to various activities, and those highly important dance cards (over 50). Names include Seabury, de Peyster, Ms. Westmoreland Davis, Governor Brown of Rhode Island (?) and other names such as Coit, Coles, Flanagan, and many more. In all, some 2000 documents and ephemera relating to a family in the midst of the social whirl of the gay nineties. Extra shipping. For the collection (5937978534)

77 New York Freeman's Journal and Catholic Register
NY 1870+
We offer 151 issues, published during the most infrequently found time line per OCLC (1115). In fact, we found only one entry accommodating these years. In traditiional news folio, these are overall in remarkabl good condition...a few w/age stains, 4 with small (1/2 x 3")burn marks, several with mailing folds Alll together in three folio volumes (bkstrps fragile and worn), with a few issues on inferior paper. Crazy volumation: last ten issues ooze over to the next year with a date change March 15. So then we offer 1870 VOL 30#41, 43-46, 48. Vol 31#3-5, 8, 10-12, 16-19, 23, 25, 27-8, 31-33, 33 (number used twice), 34, 36, 38-9. 1871, VOL 32# 9, 13, 18-19, 22-3, 25-6, 28-32, 34, 39, 42-49, 52. 1872, VOL 33 # 1-15, 17, 20, 28, 33, 35. 1973 VOL 33 # 42-45, 47-52. VOL 34# 1-8, 10, 12, 14-5, 17 (number used twice!)-18, 21-25, 28-36, 38-52. And from 1874, Vol 35 # 1-14, 16-22, 24-5, 27-8, 30-31. This weekly provided continuous updates on Catholicism in Europe: Persecution in Italy and Germany, Japan, and activities in France and sometimes England and Ireland. US details on Catholocism in Parkersburg, WVA (two articles!), Spiritualists n Chicago, and at least one article each on activities in Virginia, Tenessee, Minnesota, Indiana, Michigan, Louisiana, and North Carolina. 79 Collection of about 150 POST CARDS issued during World War II.

Largely from all over east coast, but some from middle west. About 130 to Somerville, MA & twenty to Burlington, NC. Well above half are the "free" frank soldier-sent cards from all over U.S. Also some from Nebraska to Massachusetts. A few cards in Greek language. I believe these are all same family but the last name suffered from mis-spelling and poor calligraphy: Meletiou, Magrokanis, Maories, etc. The young lady who received these cards had several admirers. The family sent cards, also. From the addresses one can trace her migration from MA to NC. where she seems to have married into a restaurant family. (5478081756)
