67 Smith, Gerrit "SPAIN--CUBA" (broadside).

Smith rails at Spain's continuation of slavery in Cuba, especially because Spain had received much money from Great Britain to abandon slavery & didn't. 68 Smith, Gerrit GERRIT SMITH AND THE VIGILANT ASSOCIATION OF THE CITY OF NEW-YORK.
NY 1860 16mo
29pp. Wrps, v.g. Smith already was attempting to distance himself from John Brown's insurrection at Harper's Ferry to "free the slaves," although the 1st victim was Heywood Shepherd, a free black. A long-time abolitionist willing to put money where his mouth was, Smith could not stand the horror of Brown's actions & rather conveniently developed a nervous break down. (4947285237)

70 Smith, Gerritt SECOND LETTER OF GERRITT SMITH TO THE NEW YORK TRIBUNE
Peterboro, NY 1855 folio
4pp. A nice wide-margined copy of Smith's defense of his actions during the NE bill; & defend himself he must, for the ed. has indeed tied the tin can of inconsistency to Smith's tail. Unfairly, however, the ed. quotes from a private letter that Smith had sent to a friend. And on & on & on the author defends his anti slavery views. This document gives as good an insight in to Smith's reasoning process as any we've seen. Smith, born w/a golden spoon in his mouth, is respected for his social up-lift efforts, misguided & maladroit as they may have been. The reader will need to weigh whether the good was off set by the stupidity. OCLC locates two copies of this document. Black Americans. Political. New York. (4077660030)
