Lone Scouts of America (several publications). V.p. Largely c.1918. Collection of 11 publications, each w/two or more examples. Total of 22 issues. Lone Scouting was commenced c.1916 for the kids who lived in rural splendor but who lacked enough neighbors to make a pack. Interestingly race didn't seem to be a problem, for I noticed the name of a person from a strongly predominantly black community. Because of the isolation, solo activities or activities for two or three youngsters were in order, & one of the projects was amateur journalism, where one could write, set up, print, mail, tend subscriptions, etc. There is some evidence of close cooperation among United Amateur Press Assoc., Lone Scout Press Assoc., etc., though one must remember that the former was open to people of any age while the later was likely closed to those over 21. One wonders how many UP & AP staffers were LSA in younger years. The collector from whence these came preserved & protected by stapling into manila file folders trimmed to size, gracing each w/a color cvr. The papers varied in size from 4 x 5 to larger, & from 4pp. & up. The more sophisticated used photo cuts while others seem to have used woodcuts. As they acknowledged exchanges, ran ads for ptg, chatted about competition, they unknowingly have provided the prospective purchaser w/valuable bibliographic info. & data about extraordinarily scarce imprints. None of these titles appears in the Union List of Serials, though NY Public has posted a run of Lone Scout Mags, 1915-1924. Here are at least two issues each of 11 publications as follows: American Collector, Birmingham AL, 1919; Collector's Companion, Muncy PA, 1918; Golden Quill, La Porte IN, 1920; Little Beaver, Chicago, 1918; Lone Scout Junior, Council Bluffs, IA, 1918; Lone Scout Sportsman, Merrill, NE, 1919; Military Tribune, Baizetown, KY, 1919; Nature Paper, Foxcroft, ME, 1920; Swastika, Columbia, MO, 1920; Universal Scout, Webster, NY, 1917; Volunteer, Bell Buckle, TN, 1919.
