12 Price, R.N. HOLSTON METHODISM: FROM ITS ORIGIN TO THE PRESENT TIME WITH THE INDEX.
Nashville, etc. sm 8vo
On1904-1914.TOGETHER WITH FRANCES C. HART IMPROVED INDEX FOR HOLSTON METHODISM. C. 1960.46P. Price's massive work takes up almost 2500 pp to provide Methodist Appalachian history, covering contiguous points of VA, WV, TN, GA & NC (Radford, VA to Dalton, GA) from Revolution throughout the CW to post bellum. Ross' Biblio So. Appalachia, Smith's TN Hist. An extremely important key to understanding the Southern Appalachian Highlander, this work was not begun until after Price turned 70 when he began assembling "a wealth of facts, and speech and deeds of persistent men, many of them endowed in mind, all of them possessed of great souls, and set them forth in narrative, picturesque, vivid, affecting." (E. E. Wiley, eulogy of Price). He never made money on this work, for by 1915 he reported a debt still of 22 dollars and 71 cents. "I have paid the Publ. House all of my income that I could spare from a mere living, and will continue to do so." This work is extremely scarce as a set, each vol. issued as completed. Vol II, IV-V near fine. Vol I w/ some scrapes, inch to bkstrp. Vol II recased, new ep and a few spots. Only one other five-vol set offered on-line, and it lacks the index. 5+1 vol. (5836710543)
