11 Labor Day Celebration UMWA Float.
Weir, KS 1908
Two photos, each 7¾ x 9½ on a 11 x 13" mats. One shows a four-horse team (three white & a "dark") w/flag bedecked bridles, hooked abreast to a double truck (eight iron wheels) holding the base of an oil well & a forge, w/four workers & two drivers aboard. In the other image: eight men, two women & a child stand abreast the same vehicle w/its load. The ladies' hats bedecked w/dead bird parts, the four men's hats visible are each different: boater, derby, flat-crown felt, & flop-brim straw. Each of the men sports a celebratory badge. Our eastern lighting suggests the triangular photographer's mark might say Davis & Makkel. Question: United Mine Workers of Amer. or United Mineral Workers of Amer.? Alas, Weir, Kansas has disappeared from recent atlases. For the pair… (4323683346)
