81 Sands, Alexander H. HISTORY OF A SUIT IN EQUITY, AS PROSECUTED AND DEFENDED IN THE VIRGINIA STATE COURTS AND IN THE UNITED STATES CIRCUIT COURTS.
Richmond 1882
Second ed. (first ptd. 1854). This title has a total of 760 text pages and LX pg. index. The index is interleaved with blanks on which (in same handwriting as author's name above title) one finds copious notes amplifying the index. In addition the set has a few marginal notations. All in good calf, some rubbing to bkstrp (not affecting readability of labels). It is quite likely this edition issued as one vol. and later divided for ease of author's notes (Vide: interleaved blanks). Both vols. also have a proprietary stamp from Sand's son William. 2 vol. 86 Smith, Gerrit GERRIT SMITH AND THE VIGILANT ASSOCIATION OF THE CITY OF NEW-YORK.

29pp. Wrps, v.g. Smith already was attempting to distance himself from John Brown's insurrection at Harper's Ferry to "free the slaves," although the 1st victim was Heywood Shepherd, a free black. A long-time abolitionist willing to put money where his mouth was, Smith could not stand the horror of Brown's actions & rather conveniently developed a nervous break down. (4947285237)

98 U.S. Internal Revenue Service Four forms related to stills.
DC c.1900
2 items. Here's your chance to fill out these blank forms on one of your disliked acquaintances & embarrass beyond belief; just be sure to use authentic ink. Condition is unused but a few w/age marks, generally v.g. The two forms are #10- "Personal Services", two pp. For Services Rendered as Informer, Posseman, Special Employee Under Internal Revenue Service Laws (the two pp. are slightly different) #192- Report Showing Condition of Fruit Distillery. Large Double folio (p. 1 w/local data, p. 2 & 3 w/report details p. 4 w/jacket data). I see by today's paper that VA maintains its reputation by destruction of a 20 unit 55 gallon each pot still in Craig Co. The judge in the rickety old Fluvanna Co. Courthouse ordered destruction once of 60 glass gallon jars of "receipt." When the sheriff threw the ax back over his shoulder, it knocked a porch pillar loose & porch roof collapsed. "Aha," said a saddened & would-be pickled onlooker, "destroy John Barleycorn & the pillars of justice fall." "Hail, Fluvanna!" "Quick, order these before your neighbor does!" Caution- You might need add'l papers to commence this line of business for yourself. Law. Appalachia. Crime. (3919947585)
