1 APPLETON'S JOURNAL OF LITERATURE, SCIENCE AND ART.
NY 1869+
Two hundred twenty-three individual numbers plus various supplements. Beyond the highlight of the travel issues (illus. by Harry Fenn , J Smille, & J. Hill) are the plts by Winslow Homer. Treatment of various enterprises (coal mining), natural wonders (red wood tree being harvested, makes Bush smile), & local info. (City of Cincinnati). The text is usually in v.g. condition, & four of the vols are in orig. lea. & marbled bds. The other five have recent bkstrps & new labels. The text illus. are present, but some of the fold or supplement plts, most are either torn, creased, or gone. You'd be better off thinking of buying the 223 issues & letting any extra plts be serendipity. And pricing? Cheapest single issue @ ten (try that on your calculator!). And single volumes on line to nearly four hundred. (calculator?). ....for these nine.... 9 vol. (4359193953)

8 (Browne, Gordon Frederick) A NOBODY'S SCRAP BOOK.
London 1900 sm. 4to
approx. 90pp. Delightfully dry cartoons by an illustrator known for work in books by Henty, Scott, Lang, etc. Although this title is not listed by OCLC or by NUC (by title or author), Browne is credited w/Nonsense for Somebody by a Nobody & w/Some More Nonsense... By a Nobody. Browne is most to be noted for his series (in one case he has developed six panels to describe the misfortunes of on-lookers when a young lady falls through the ice). Those titles (one location each per NUC) have same publr & the technique is extremely similar. Twenty of the leaves have cartoons on each side, each leaf with intervening blank (making 40 leaves); 1st leaf is ftspc & 2nd is the t.p. Browne practiced great restraint in color. Half cl., paper (shelf worn) over bds. This is still a very good copy, resewn. Illustrated. (203854691)

9 (Vergilius, Maro, Publius) (AENEID) FREE AND INDEPENDENT TRANSLATION OF THE FIRST AND FOURTH BOOKS.
Winsted, CT (1869?)
22pp. Practically Englished, for instance, "O Muse! relate me the facts if you happen to know 'em/Concerning the hero of this astonishing poem." Theodore Vaill is credited w/the translation (called the University Edition), of which NUC reports one location for this ed., several for the 1870 ed., one for the 1875 ed., & two for the 1908 ptg. It is possible that the 1875 ed. is identical w/this "earnest attempt to give our grand old Poet a lift." Thos. Worth has provided six puckish illus. (Venus & Juno talk before a door which has a sign about rooms to let). Neat piece of work w/out wrps. Removed. Connecticut. Classics. Illustration. (3280355199)
