39 Gravely, William H. CAN THE WATER BE MADE FINE? SOUTHERN POLITICS AND WOMEN: PRIMARIES, PROHIBITION, THE NEGRO QUESTION AND REMEDY.
Roanoke 1921
35ppp. Probable second edition (with four pages more, dealing with "Labor". Wrps, .v.g. (mild attic dust). A very scarce pamphlet, the first ed listed by OCLC in only six libraries, and not one of them predominantly Afro-American. This second ed. unrecorded by OCLC. Gravely, an atty who served in VA Legislature, speaks w/more respect & openness about the "Negro Question & Remedy" than most. "The truth is then, & let it be plainly told, that in order to solve the political problem in the Southern states, & to bring about a condition of affairs suitable for the participation of white women in Republican or opposition politics, not only must the political supremacy of the white race be guaranteed, but the respective races must pursue their political activities in distinct paths-in separate conventions, at separate ballot-boxes, & for separate representatives." In return for the privilege of Black members to the House of Representatives, they would not be allowed any VA State political patronage "to avoid chance of disagreeable" contact, especially w/white women. He would require a $2000 property qualification exclusively applicable to Negro voters. Good example of being far in advance for his time in strongly segregated southside VA (Trial of Martinsville Seven took place 1951, and the Danville Riots nearly a century earlier). "Rt foot fwd. left stagnant". No copy on net. Temperance. (5795855124)

40 Griggs, Sutton E. THE HINDERED HAND: OR, THE REIGN OF THE REPRESSIONIST.
Nashville, TN 1905
333(5)pp. Black author, self publ. Called third edition. Phil McBlain noted Griggs "The present ed. of 'The Hindered Hand' differs from previous eds in that a review of Mr. Thomas Dixon's 'Leopard Spots' appears in former eds in the form of a conversation between two of the characters of the book, whereas in the present ed. the review is more fully given in an article appearing in the rear of this book after the closing of the story…" Griggs summarized Dixon in a powerful negative, rather like Martin Luther's indictment of Erasmus. This is largely v.g. copy, the only defects being 1/32" wear at bkstrp ends & mild to average loss of the white clay-based ink border. Together w/Arno paperback of Griggs' Imperium In Imperio (valuable essay on Griggs). (5003405763)
